Some of this walk is along quiet country lanes and after leaving the A286 the chances are that you will see very few cars, if any at all. You pass under the dismantled Chichester to Midhurst railway line on the way out and again on the way back. At West Dean on the A286 turn down the road by the side of the pub
and park on the grass by the side of the Lavant. |

Leave your car on the grass by the river
Lavant and head off along the road towards the church. At the main road
turn right and cross over onto the pavement. Carry on until you come to
the junction in the picture on the right. Turn left here.No1 on map. |

You will now see the railway bridge in the picture on the left and you are heading up a lovely country lane. |
Carry on up the hill and after the bend in the picture on the left you pass a house on your right.Keep straight on to the farm and to the right of the barn in the picture on the right. |

You now come onto a stone track and in the distance you will see the house in the picture on the left.When you come to the junction in the picture above turn left. No 2 on map. |

Follow this path down to the gates in
the picture on the left and go straight across into Hyter's Lane. |

Keep heading along this road until the junction in the picture above, where you turn left down a lane. No 3 on map. When the lane starts to go to the right,as the picture on the right, you need to turn left into the field. No 4 on map. |

It is easy to miss this spot but I have shown the finger post in the picture above. I have never seen a stile here but I think it is probably under the vegetation. Follow the edge of the field for a few yards,as the picture on the right and then head of across the field to the stile marked in the picture. |

Carry straight on across the next small
field to a stile shown in the picture on the left. Now cross diagonally
to a point just right of the farm buildings in the picture on the right. |

Once across to the farm buildings take
the path along the right hand side of the fence, shown in the picture
on the left, to the wood. No 5 on map. |

Now head downhill through the trees to
the road where you turn right. |

Just a short way along you come to the old railway bridge and then to the pub. Cross straight over and follow the road back to where you parked your car on the grass by the side of the river Lavant. |
