This walk follows the coastal path from Yarmouth to Freshwater Bay.From M27 junction 1 take A337 to Lymington.Leave your car at the ferry terminal at Lymington and cross the Solent on the ferry as a passenger. There is a ferry every 30 minutes. For walking on the Isle of Wight you need the Ordnance Survey map: Outdoor Leisure 29 Distance: About 9 Miles. Then bus back to Yarmouth or walk the Freshwater Way back which is about another 3 miles. Yellow on map. Allow all day for this walk. The coastal path on this walk is very well marked.

About the Walk

On leaving the ferry terminal and reaching the road turn right and very soon you will cross the Yar bridge. Continue along the road and when it goes left you turn right down to the sea wall. Now turn left along the wall. At the end turn up into the trees where you will meet the road, now turn right. Take the path into Fort Victoria Country Park and just keep to this path until you meet Monks Lane. Turn left and walk to the entrance to Brambles Chine holiday centre on your right. Walk straight through the chalets until you see a sign telling you to go left . After the path narrows you can choose either turn right down to the beach, then turn left along the sand for a short distance for Colwell Bay Seafront. Black on map. Picture below. May not be possible at high tide. Or turn left and walk to the main road turn right then right again down Chine Road for Colwell Bay. Turn left at the seafront and follow the sea wall round to Totland Bay. Pass the pier and keep going until you see the wooden steps that take you up to the road.They are just past the old lifeboat station. Turn right and look for the signpost on your right by the side of a house for Alumbay. Picture on the left Follow this path until you get out into the open. Take the path that goes uphill and bears slightly to your left. Picture on the right. This is Headon Hill. Towards the top bear slightly right to the Tumuli. This area is called Headen Warren. Follow the path downhill towards Alum Bay Pleasure Park turning right when you meet the road. Pass the glass gift shop and follow the road to the right that takes you up to the Needles looking to your right to the view over Alumbay and the Solent. From the top you get a good view of the Needles Light House. Take the stile by Coastguard's Cottages and head along the downs for the Tennyson Monument that you can see in the distance. There are good views all around you now on your right the sea and on your left all along the Solent on the north of the island. Keep going and eventually you drop down to a road. This is where you get the bus back to Yarmouth, Turn right and you can see the small seafront at Freshwater Bay.
